Luisa always felt refreshed when she remembered Carmen
Bomba, the porter and human beast of burden in the Santa
Ana marketplace. Each afternoon when he finished work, he'd
get a bit drunk to arouse his courage, and he'd pause before
each open window in the neighborhood to recite the verses he
had composed that day.
